15 Common Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

Are you planning to redecorate, or maybe you’re moving to a new home? if so, there are some common decorating mistakes that many people make that can affect the way that the place looks and feels. So, to help you out, we have listed 15 of the most common mistakes that people make when they are decorating their home, whether it’s an apartment or a house.

Choosing an Area Rug That’s Too Small

Is the area rug that you are using too small? Rugs that are small are really common when it comes to home decorating. All of your furniture should be able to sit on your rug. If it’s not possible, the furniture’s front legs of the pieces that are more solid can be placed on your area rug if the four legs can’t be. However, for smaller pieces all of the legs should be able to fit on your rug.

Choosing Your Paint Color Before Anything Else

You shouldn’t ever choose your paint color in the beginning. There are lots of colors from which to choose and you can easily change it. Choose the costliest items first and then use them to select the right color of paint.

Hanging Your Chandelier Really High

This is a huge problem. The goal is to light your room not your ceiling. When you hang it up too high, you are going to limit your light’s spread. When you do this, your room’s going to appear darker. Think of it this way. Take a ball and a flashlight. When you hold your flashlight further away, the amount of light on your ball is smaller. When you bring it closer, the light is spread out. Same thing goes for a chandelier.

Hanging Artwork Really High

A lot of people hang their art really close to their ceiling, and this is a mistake. You should hang your artwork at the level of your eyes. This will vary based on who you are, so you want to use your own judgement. But it’s a lot better to hang it lower rather than higher.

Choosing Short Drapes or Curtains

Drapes and curtains should skim the ground. If they’re a bit longer and have a puddling effect, that’s okay too. But they shouldn’t ever be shorter. When you have short curtains, they are going to make your wall look shorter and truncated, the same way that too-short pants do.

Using a lot of Throw Pillows

Don’t get us wrong – throw pillows make great decorative accents. However, you shouldn’t use lots of them so that you’re always moving them off of your bed, couch or chair before you sit or lay down. Simply because stores display them that way it doesn’t mean you have to do it too.

Creating a Room with a Theme

Although this can be really fun for decorating, many people become tired of the look fast. It’s easy for a theme room to become outdated and old quickly. Then you will have to spend more money when you replace the items that are no longer wanted. It’s better to add some theme elements into your regular room. For example, if you like the jungle theme, have a few things like cheetah prints cushions.

Opting for Style Rather Than Comfort

There’s a lot of items that look great but they’re not comfortable to lay or sit on. You should always think about how you are going to be using your piece before purchasing it.

Pushing All Your Furniture Against Walls

There are times when the size of the room can make this hard but try pulling the furniture away from your walls to create some areas for intimate conversation. This is really important in family rooms and living rooms. Sometimes people are worried about showing their furniture pieces’ backs. However, if they’re finished there isn’t any reason that they shouldn’t.

Relying on Your Overhead Lighting

Even though overhead light’s a good choice, it won’t give you the illumination that you need. It also isn’t very flattering. You want to have a mixture of ambient, task and overhead lighting. Use floor lamps, sconces, table lamps, whatever you prefer. Just make sure that you’re using a mix. It’s going to provide you with additional light and make your room and everybody in the room look much better.

Not Testing Paint Before Deciding

Along with not choosing your color first, you want to sure you’re testing the paint first before you buy a several gallons of paint and find out that you don’t like it. Not only are you out of the money that you spent on the paint (which isn’t cheap), but you’re out all of the time that you spent painting. So, if you see a few colors that you like, try it out first and look at it in all lights – evening, morning, and afternoon. The color often looks different in different light.

Matching Everything in a Room

Although furniture often is sold in sets in the stores, sometimes this is going to dull a space’s charisma. It can make the space look a lot like a catalog rather than a place that you are lived in. Keep your room interesting and give it personality by mixing and matching the pieces that you love. The good thing about this is that when you want to replace one piece, you can do it and you don’t have to replace your whole set.

Buying Furniture That’s the Wrong Size

Furniture that’s too big or small for your space will make your whole room feel off somehow and uncomfortable. If you love the look and feel of a sofa that’s overstuffed, be certain the room’s big enough so that you can pull the look off. A big living room is going to need more than just a few club chairs too.

Using A Lot of Patterns

Even though matching and mixing patterns can be a lot of fun and it’s important to create a space that’s visually interesting, when you use too many it can make the space feel chaotic and crowded. Make sure you’re maintaining some type of continuity among and between the patterns. Vary one of the things while keeping something else consistent.

Having White Walls in All Rooms

Many people think that if they paint their walls bigger and a lot more beautiful. This does work sometimes. However, if there isn’t a lot of natural light in your room, the walls could look boring and flat. It’s best to try a shade that’s medium or neutral to give the room depth.
